A panel of association executives will share lessons learned as well as the rules by which they operate. What you can share, when you can share it, and how you transmit information is critical and essential. Yet, done badly or at the wrong time can violate trust and damage careers. Life is full of choices and the balancing act can sometimes be very fine line.

Shannon Carter, CAE
CEO
Competency & Credentialing Institute
Shannon Carter was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI) in 1999. In partnership with the CCI Board of Directors, she has led a comprehensive strategic realignment that has resulted in unprecedented growth for the organization, as well as the development and implementation of industry-leading initiatives related to patient safety, competency assessment and continuing competence. Prior to her tenure at CCI, Ms. Carter served for ten years in various staff leadership positions with the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). She holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Southern California and a master’s degree in organizational development from the University of San Francisco. She is CAE certified and has served as Vice President on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Nursing Specialties, Chairperson of the National Organization of Competency Assessment (NOCA) Program Committee and was a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Board of Directors. Her recent professional presentations include sessions at ASAE, NOCA, and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). She has published and reviewed several professional articles
Sam Mamet

Colorado Municipal League
Sam is the Executive Director of the Colorado Municipal League, where he has been Executive Director for the last 5 years and on the staff in total for 31 years. Founded in 1923, The League is a statewide membership organization of 264 cities and towns. Sam is an adjunct faculty member in the political science department of CU-Denver where he teaches a variety of classes, and is the recipient of various state and national awards honoring his work on behalf of local government.

As Membership Services Director she is responsible for membership recruitment, communication, and retention. Previously Sara worked at the Competency and Credentialing Institute as the project manager for two and half years. As project manager she was the liaison to the Board of Directors, responsible for governance issues, planning of board and committee meetings, and special projects at CCI. Prior to CCI Sara worked at the Association Management Center in Glenview, IL for three years as an account manager for multiple associations. During that time she was responsible for membership recruitment, board and committee liaison, and event planning. She recently completed the ASAE & the Center Leadership Academy class of 2010.
Marv Tuttle, Jr., CAE

Financial Planning Association Marv Tuttle, CAE, has served as executive director/CEO of the 25,000-member Financial Planning Association® (FPA®) since January 2004. A 30-year veteran in the association management field, Tuttle began his involvement in the financial planning profession as director of communications for the Institute of Certified Financial Planners (ICFP) in Denver, CO, in October 1983. Prior to his appointment as executive director/CEO,Tuttle served as FPA’s associate executive director (1993-2004) and publisher/editor of FPA’s flagship publication, the Journal of Financial Planning (1983-2004). In 1996, he received the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), denoting a level of skill and expertise in the field of association management. That same year, the Journal of Financial Planning, under Tuttle’s guidance, was recognized as the Most Improved Magazine/Journal by ASAE for large associations in the United States. In 2001, he helped to establish FPA’s National Financial Planning Support Center, which is dedicated to developing and providing pro bono services for the public in need.
